2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Major Update with New Tech and Power

Mercedes-Benz is rolling out a substantial refresh for its flagship S-Class sedan in 2027, bringing significant changes to powertrains, interior technology, and exterior styling—though the core design remains familiar. The update is not a complete redesign, but rather an extensive mid-cycle refresh with over half of the components revised.

Illuminated Exterior Signals Luxury

The most noticeable exterior change is a new lighting signature. The 2027 S-Class features three-pointed-star headlamps and taillamps, an illuminated grille, and an optional light-up hood ornament. These features are designed to enhance the car’s visibility and presence, particularly at night. The grille is 20% larger, embedding MB stars, and puddle lamps now project the Mercedes-Benz logo onto the ground. High-pressure-cast wheels with an intricate 50-spoke design are available as a Manufaktur option.

AI-Powered Interior with Hyperscreen

Inside, the S-Class receives the full Hyperscreen setup for the first time. This dash-spanning display incorporates a 12.3-inch driver screen, a 14.4-inch central touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display. The driver’s screen is positioned at a more upright angle for improved ergonomics.

The latest MBUX system integrates Google automotive AI, with optional animated AI assistants. These can take the form of an MB star or “LittleBenz,” a humanoid face designed to create a more human-like digital experience. Rear-seat passengers benefit from larger 13.1-inch screens with video conferencing capabilities. Heated seatbelts and digital vent control are new features, enhancing comfort and convenience.

Enhanced Powertrains Deliver More Power

The 2027 S-Class offers updated powertrains across all trim levels. The S500’s inline-six now produces 442 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, with peak bursts up to 472 lb-ft. The S580’s twin-turbo V-8 receives a flat-plane crankshaft, increasing output to 530 horsepower and 533 lb-ft. The S580e plug-in hybrid combines the inline-six with electric power, delivering a total of 576 horsepower.

All variants retain the nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Standard features include a 4.5-degree rear-steering system, with an optional 10-degree version for enhanced maneuverability. Airmatic air springs and Active Body Control with iDamping ensure a smooth ride. The iDamping system uses cloud-based data from other Mercedes vehicles to proactively adjust suspension settings based on road conditions.

Availability and Pricing

The updated S500, S580, and S580e models will go on sale in the second half of 2026, with pricing yet to be announced. Mercedes-Benz has not yet revealed details on the AMG S63 or Maybach variants.

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class represents a significant evolution of luxury and technology, solidifying its position as a leader in the high-end automotive market. This refresh enhances both performance and passenger experience, demonstrating Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation and refinement.
