BAW Expands 212 Off-Road Line with New Variants

Beijing Auto Works (BAW) is extending its revived 212 off-road series with a preview of upcoming models: a soft-top version, a pickup (Explorer 01), and a limited-edition variant. These additions build on the success of the initial T01 models launched in 2024, signaling BAW’s commitment to expanding the historic BJ212 nameplate into a broader family of rugged vehicles.

Reviving a Legacy

The 212 brand represents a deliberate revival of a nearly six-decade-old Chinese automotive icon. The modern 212 consciously echoes the design of the classic off-roader, retaining its squared body, exposed spare wheel, and upright stance. BAW relaunched the brand mid-2024 with a plan to introduce a range of petrol, diesel, and eventually electrified off-road models. The move taps into a growing demand for retro-inspired, capable vehicles in the Chinese market.

T01 Series: Foundation for Expansion

The initial T01 series, launched in August 2024, established the foundation for this expansion. Three configurations were offered: Mechanic (139,900 yuan / $19,700 USD), Explorer (159,900 yuan / $22,500 USD), and Review Officer (172,900 yuan / $24,400 USD). A Long Wind special edition (188,800 yuan / $26,600 USD) followed. All T01 models share a body-on-frame construction and a 2.0T GDI turbocharged petrol engine producing 185 kW and 410 N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and electronic part-time Four Wheel Drive.

Technical specifications reveal impressive off-road capabilities: 40-degree approach and 36-degree departure angles, a claimed 100 percent maximum gradient, and up to 850 mm of wading depth on select versions. The vehicle also includes an all-terrain system with eight selectable modes and a six-axis gyroscope interface displaying compass, pitch, roll, and altitude.

Explorer 01 Pickup: Extended Utility

The upcoming Explorer 01 pickup variant retains the 212’s signature boxy design while adding a longer body and cargo bed. Dimensions are as follows: 5,469 mm length, 1,955 mm width, 1,970 mm height, and a 3,488 mm wheelbase. The pickup is powered by a 2.3T diesel engine producing 140 kW and has a reported fuel consumption of 9.1 L/100 km. Optional equipment includes a roll bar, cargo covers, tow hooks, and exterior styling elements.

Soft-Top and Limited Edition: Future Reveals

BAW has not yet released full specifications for the soft-top or limited-edition models. Details are expected to be disclosed at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The soft-top variant suggests a focus on open-air driving experiences, while the limited edition likely introduces unique styling and features to enhance exclusivity.

The expansion of the 212 series underscores BAW’s commitment to capitalizing on the growing demand for rugged, retro-inspired vehicles in the Chinese market. The addition of the pickup, soft-top, and limited edition variants demonstrates a strategic effort to broaden the appeal of the 212 brand and solidify its position as a key player in the off-road segment
