BMW Confirms Next-Gen 4 Series, Including High-Performance M4

2

BMW has officially confirmed that the 4 Series will continue as a distinct model line despite its mechanical overlap with the 3 Series. This decision solidifies the brand’s commitment to offering both a practical sedan/wagon (3 Series) and a sportier, coupe-focused alternative (4 Series). The next generation, expected to arrive after the redesigned 3 Series around late 2026 or early 2027, will include a new M4 performance variant, maintaining BMW’s presence in the high-performance coupe segment.

Electric and Hybrid Future

BMW’s upcoming 3 Series will feature an all-electric version with a high-output, quad-motor M3 variant capable of up to 1000hp (746kW). However, the brand insists it will continue developing petrol engines alongside electric options. Prototypes of a hybrid-powered M3 have already been spotted in testing, suggesting a transition rather than an immediate abandonment of traditional powertrains.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe and Market Dynamics

While the 4 Series Gran Coupe was discontinued in Australia in late 2024, the electric i4 sedan (a Tesla Model 3 competitor) remains available. The continuation of the 4 Series line is critical, as its absence would threaten the i4’s future and eliminate the M4 badge, a key performance model for BMW.

Strategic Model Overlap

The decision to continue both the 3 Series and 4 Series mirrors Audi’s earlier approach of differentiating coupe/convertible models (A5) from their sedan/wagon counterparts (A4). Despite Audi simplifying its naming strategy, BMW intends to maintain this distinction, leveraging existing platforms and synergies to reduce development costs.

Executive Confirmation

According to BMW’s Chief Technology Officer, Joachim Post, the 4 Series plays a vital role in the brand’s identity. “The 4 Series is an important car for us. It’s more sporty [than the 3 Series], and BMW is a sporty brand which has a clear heritage also on the performance side.” He emphasized that the 4 Series provides an efficient extension of existing models, allowing for easy adaptation of powertrains and designs.

The 4 Series, like the X4 (based on the X3 SUV), offers customers a sportier aesthetic without requiring entirely new platforms, maximizing profitability and model diversity.

Neue Klasse Integration

BMW’s next-generation vehicles will be built on the Neue Klasse platform, which debuted with the iX3. This platform will underpin both electric and hybrid versions of the 3 and 4 Series, ensuring future compatibility with advanced powertrains and in-car technology. The company’s strategy centers on “huge synergies,” with minimal effort required to spin off derivatives like the M4 from core models.

In conclusion, BMW’s decision to retain the 4 Series underscores its commitment to offering a diverse lineup that caters to both practicality and performance. The next generation will integrate electric and hybrid options while preserving the iconic M4 badge, ensuring BMW remains competitive in the high-performance segment.
