BMW X1 Receives Updated Design, But Remains Traditional Under the Hood

BMW has refreshed its compact X1 SUV with the striking new front-end styling previously reserved for its next-generation “Neue Klasse” electric vehicles. The update brings a more modern look to the X1, but the vehicle retains its existing internal combustion engine options and platform. This move highlights BMW’s current strategy of blending new design language with existing hardware as it ramps up production of its fully electric models.

New Look, Familiar Foundation

The most significant change is the X1’s revised front end, which now features BMW’s signature visor-style grille and headlight arrangement. This design element, first seen on the iX3 and recently unveiled i3 sedan, gives the X1 a cleaner, more contemporary appearance. The rest of the bodywork already had a modern feel, making the transition seamless.

Inside, the cabin receives BMW’s latest Curved Panoramic iDrive display, a large tablet-style touchscreen that stretches across the dashboard. This updated infotainment system reduces reliance on physical buttons, aligning the X1 with the tech found in BMW’s newest EVs.

Despite these visual and technological upgrades, the X1 remains built on the FAAR platform, which it shares with the 1 Series hatchback and Mini models. This means that buyers will still find familiar 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0-liter engines, as well as hybrid options, under the hood.

BMW’s Product Offensive: Design First, Electrification Later

This partial upgrade of the X1 illustrates BMW’s broader strategy: a massive product overhaul with roughly 40 new or updated models planned through 2027. Some of these will be full Neue Klasse EVs, including an all-electric M3, while others will adopt the new design cues without fully committing to the new electric underpinnings.

The decision to apply Neue Klasse styling to existing combustion models is a deliberate move. BMW is eager to modernize its entire lineup visually, even as it continues to produce cars with traditional engines. Leaked images and future plans suggest similar treatment for the electric iX1, the 5 Series, i5, X3, X5, 3 Series, and 4 Series. Some models will receive minor tweaks, while others will closely resemble their all-electric Neue Klasse equivalents.

BMW is effectively bridging the gap between its current and future lineups by introducing the new design language across a broader range of vehicles, maintaining consumer interest in both traditional and electric models.

The X1 update is a clear signal that BMW is not abandoning its existing customer base while simultaneously pushing forward with its electrification plans. The company is leveraging the appeal of its newest design language to keep its combustion-engine cars relevant as the automotive industry shifts toward EVs.
