BYD Shark 6: Upgraded Plug-in Hybrid Ute Set for Australian Launch

20

The BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute is receiving a significant power upgrade and increased towing capacity, with an Australian launch imminent. Government certification documents confirm the arrival of the enhanced model, promising more performance without a major price jump.

Increased Power and Towing

The updated Shark 6 will feature a more potent powertrain: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with dual electric motors (200kW front, 150kW rear). The total system output reaches 345kW, an increase of 24kW over the current model’s 321kW. This might not seem like a massive leap, but the real benefit is in utility. The upgraded Shark 6 boasts a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, up from the existing 2.5-tonne limit, making it far more capable for work or recreational use.

What This Means for Buyers

The Shark 6’s success in Australia, where it outsells rivals like the Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV despite offering only one variant, underscores a clear market demand for affordable electric utes. BYD sold over 18,000 units last year, while the Ranger and Cannon Alpha combined barely exceeded 2,500. The new 2.0T model will likely broaden BYD’s appeal.

The upgraded model has a slightly higher tare mass (2738kg vs. 2675kg) and larger front brakes to accommodate the added power. No visible cosmetic changes are apparent in certification images, but these may be placeholders. The 2.0T powertrain will initially be available only on the dual-cab body style, with the cab/chassis variant coming later in 2026.

Market Context and Outlook

BYD’s ability to undercut competitors on price while delivering competitive performance has disrupted the Australian PHEV ute segment. The timing of this upgrade is strategic; it arrives as demand for hybrid and electric work vehicles grows. The Shark 6 has proven that buyers don’t necessarily need to pay a premium for a capable electric ute.

The launch of the 2.0T variant, alongside the upcoming cab/chassis option, will likely further solidify BYD’s position as a dominant force in this rapidly expanding market. The company’s ability to scale production and maintain competitive pricing will be critical for continued success.
