BYD has pushed back the release of its highly anticipated 5.2-meter Dynasty-branded full-size SUV to the second quarter of 2026, citing increased competition in the Chinese automotive market. Originally unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, the model – internally known as Dynasty-D – will undergo further refinement before its debut. This delay reflects a strategic response to a crowded and rapidly evolving SUV segment in China.
Market Pressures and Vehicle Positioning
The decision to postpone the launch stems from growing pressure in the large SUV category. The Dynasty flagship is designed to appeal to both family and business buyers, offering configurations for six or seven passengers. The 6-seat variant prioritizes second-row luxury, while the 7-seat version caters to larger families. This dual approach allows BYD to capture a wider range of consumers in a market increasingly demanding versatility.
Design and Technological Features
The SUV showcases BYD’s latest design language, dubbed “Dragon Face Reborn.” Key aesthetic elements include a striking chrome “dragon whisker” across the front, integrating a 2.4-meter laser-etched light strip. The vehicle is equipped with OLED headlights, an active grille system for improved aerodynamics, and concealed door handles for a streamlined profile. At the rear, a continuous taillight and dual high-mounted brake lights complete the look.
The interior draws inspiration from the Forbidden City’s symmetrical design, featuring a triple-screen dashboard and a three-spoke steering wheel. The cabin incorporates sustainable materials such as eco-friendly suede and matte carbon fiber. Second-row passengers benefit from zero-gravity seats with electric adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions.
Advanced Driver Assistance and Powertrain
Technologically, the SUV integrates BYD’s “God’s Eye B” driver-assistance system, powered by a Nvidia Orin-X platform and utilizing one lidar sensor and 12 cameras. A unique feature is the inclusion of an onboard drone system for dynamic takeoff and landing. The powertrain combines a 1.5-liter hybrid engine with front and rear electric motors, offering four-wheel drive and an expected pure-electric range exceeding 200 kilometers. The vehicle also incorporates the DiSus-A adjustable suspension and rear-wheel steering for enhanced handling.
The delay highlights the competitive landscape in China’s premium SUV sector. By postponing the launch, BYD is ensuring that the Dynasty flagship meets market expectations and delivers a refined product ready to compete with established and emerging players.
