BYD Boosts Denza EV Range with Larger Battery Packs

BYD is upgrading its Denza N9 and N8L luxury plug-in hybrid crossovers with a 40% increase in electric range thanks to a new 75.3 kWh battery pack. This move comes as sales for both models have lagged behind competitors, prompting a significant revision to their core specifications.

Struggling Sales Trigger Upgrade

Launched in March and October 2025 respectively, the Denza N9 and N8L haven’t met sales expectations. From January to February 2026, combined deliveries totaled just 4,472 units – significantly lower than the 11,481 units sold by Geely’s Zeekr 9X in the same period. This underperformance makes the range boost a critical step for BYD to remain competitive in China’s rapidly evolving EV market.

New Battery, Increased Range

The updated models will feature a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack from BYD’s FinDreams subsidiary, likely the second-generation Blade battery. The capacity jumps from the previous 46.9–46.99 kWh to 75.264 kWh, resulting in a 40% improvement in all-electric range.

  • The Denza N9 now achieves up to 315 km on a single charge.
  • The lighter Denza N8L extends its range to 320 km.

However, the larger battery adds significant weight. The N9’s curb weight climbs to 3,280 kg (gross weight: 3,760 kg), while the N8L weighs in at 3,120 kg (gross weight: 3,600 kg). This increase may affect handling and efficiency, but is considered necessary given the industry trend.

Following the Competition

BYD’s decision aligns with a broader shift in the market, where larger batteries are becoming standard. Several competitors already offer comparable or larger capacities, including:

  • Leapmotor D19 (80.3 kWh)
  • Wey V9X (77.7 kWh)
  • Li Auto L9 Livis (72.7 kWh)
  • Zeekr 9X (70 kWh)
  • IM LS9 (66 kWh)
  • Voyah Taishan (65 kWh)
  • Xpeng GX (63.3 kWh)

Vehicle Specs

The Denza N9 is a full-size crossover measuring 5258/2030/1830 mm with a 3,125 mm wheelbase. It combines a 2-liter internal combustion engine (152 kW / 204 hp) with three electric motors for a combined output of 680 kW (912 hp). The slightly smaller Denza N8L measures 5200/1999/1820 mm with a 3,075 mm wheelbase, pairing the same 2-liter engine with less powerful three electric motors totaling 560 kW (750 hp).

The upgrade demonstrates BYD’s commitment to adapting quickly to market demands. While the added weight poses a challenge, the increased range is crucial for competing in the premium EV segment.
