Chevrolet Corvette to Feature New 6.7-Liter V-8 in 2027 Models

General Motors is set to introduce a high-performance 6.7-liter V-8 engine, dubbed the LS6, as the standard engine for the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette lineup. This marks a significant upgrade for the iconic sports car, delivering 535 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque – the highest output ever offered in a base Corvette. The new engine will be available on the Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X models.

The Return of the 409: A Modern Take on a Classic

The LS6’s 6.7-liter displacement (equivalent to 409 cubic inches) is a nod to the legendary big-block V-8s of the past, though this engine represents a modern evolution. Unlike its predecessors, the LS6 features port fuel injection and is the sixth generation of Chevrolet’s small-block V-8 design. It retains a cam-in-block configuration with two valves per cylinder, alongside direct injection (PDI) technology.

The key to its higher output lies in a 13.0:1 compression ratio, increased from the LT2’s 11.5:1. This necessitated the use of forged pistons and connecting rods to withstand the added stress at the engine’s 6500-rpm redline. Engineers also incorporated targeted cooling around the hottest areas of the combustion chamber—near the spark plugs and exhaust valves—to prevent detonation.

Airflow and Torque: Maximizing Performance

To feed the LS6 with enough air, GM has fitted it with a 95-mm throttle body and a tunnel-ram intake manifold. This design is intended to maximize air velocity into the cylinders, improving combustion efficiency. The engine’s torque peak arrives at 4600 rpm, earlier than the outgoing LT2’s 5150 rpm, resulting in more responsive acceleration.

Engineering Details and Sound

Engineers also added a second oil feed to the crankshaft to prevent oil starvation at higher rod pressures. The engine also features “tri-Y” exhaust manifolds, not solely for power gains, but to create a more aggressive exhaust note. Chevrolet states that full engine output is available without optional performance exhaust systems.

The Grand Sport X variant will combine the LS6 with 186 hp of front-axle electric power, for a combined total of 721 hp. The standard Corvette Stingray will retain its 4.89:1 final drive ratio, while Z51 and Grand Sport models will adopt the Z06’s 5.56:1 ratio.

The 2027 Corvette’s LS6 represents a calculated move by GM to solidify the car’s performance credentials. The engine’s design blends classic heritage with modern technology, ensuring that the Corvette remains a formidable competitor in the sports car segment.
