Gerry McGovern, the long-serving design boss of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), will leave the automaker at the end of March, ending months of speculation surrounding his position. The confirmation comes via an internal memo obtained by Autocar and now confirmed by JLR itself.

The Departure Confirmed

McGovern, who has led JLR’s design for two decades, described his tenure as a “great privilege” in the memo. He thanked the Tata family, owners of JLR, for the opportunities afforded him and indicated plans to launch a design consultancy following his exit.

Current JLR CEO, PB Balaji, acknowledged McGovern’s “significant contribution”, highlighting his “creative leadership” and “indelible stamp” on the brands. The departure follows reports from December 2025 suggesting McGovern was dismissed, claims JLR initially denied but now effectively acknowledges through this formal exit.

A Career Spanning Multiple Brands

McGovern’s career includes significant roles at Chrysler, Peugeot, Rover, and Ford before joining Land Rover in 2004. He remained with the company through its acquisition by Tata Motors in 2008, rising to become JLR’s chief creative officer in 2020. During his time at JLR, McGovern oversaw the development of the Jaguar Type 00 concept – a bold EV design intended to reposition Jaguar as a luxury competitor to Bentley.

A Controversial Legacy

While credited with revitalizing JLR’s design language, McGovern is also described by former employees as an autocratic leader with a volatile temper. Hagerty reported claims that his management style created a high-pressure environment, leading to significant turnover within the design department.

The exact circumstances surrounding his departure remain unclear; JLR has not addressed the initial reports of a dismissal. McGovern’s exit marks the end of a significant era for JLR’s design direction and raises questions about the future of the company’s evolving brand identity.

The details of McGovern’s departure remain murky, but his influence on JLR’s aesthetic is undeniable. His successor faces the challenge of maintaining the brand’s momentum while navigating a rapidly changing automotive landscape.
