Jaguar’s Electric GT: A First Look at the Future of Luxury Performance

12

Jaguar is betting heavily on its upcoming all-electric GT model, a four-door vehicle boasting a staggering 1,000 horsepower and a price tag around £120,000. Early tests suggest the company isn’t aiming for a direct competitor to sports cars like the Porsche Taycan but rather a high-performance, comfortable grand tourer designed for long-distance travel.

Engineering a New Jaguar Experience

Vehicle engineering director Matt Becker, formerly of Lotus, has spent nearly four years shaping this vehicle, which weighs in at a substantial 2,750kg. The GT’s design retains elements from the Type 00 concept, featuring a long bonnet and low-slung profile, while the interior offers a more commanding and accessible seating position than its exterior suggests.

Performance and Comfort: A Balanced Approach

The car prioritizes sustained high-speed performance over the typical EV’s instant acceleration that fades at higher speeds. At over 100mph, wind noise is present but doesn’t impede conversation, and the GT accelerates effortlessly from 120mph to 148mph. Despite noticeable body roll in “Comfort” mode, Becker assures that the car is capable of drifting when switched to “Dynamic.”

Jaguar’s goal is to deliver “comfortable, isolated, effortless performance” rather than pure track agility. The vehicle currently lacks artificial engine noises but is being fitted with sound systems developed by musicians to deliver subtle and adjustable auditory feedback.

Suspension and Handling

The GT’s air suspension demonstrates exceptional composure when handling high-speed crests, absorbing impact smoothly and maintaining control. Becker insists this behavior is true to the brand’s identity, emphasizing Jaguar’s commitment to delivering a “proper” luxury experience.

The vehicle is still under development, with full testing expected in late 2026. However, initial results suggest Jaguar is on track to deliver a compelling combination of performance, comfort, and brand prestige in its new electric GT.

Jaguar is not building a sports car; it’s engineering a luxury GT that prioritizes comfortable, high-speed touring while retaining the brand’s signature driving feel.
