Jaguar is preparing a major relaunch, aiming to redefine itself as a premier luxury electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. The British marque has confirmed its first model—an all-new electric sedan—will arrive in September 2026. This move marks a significant shift for Jaguar, which has struggled in recent years to compete with established German rivals like BMW and Audi.
The All-New Electric Sedan: Power and Range
The upcoming sedan, based on the 2024 Type 00 concept, will boast impressive performance figures. Jaguar claims the vehicle will deliver a combined output of 735kW (over 986 horsepower) and 1300Nm (959 lb-ft) of torque from its three electric motors. This will give the car all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering for enhanced handling.
The large grand tourer will also be equipped with a 120kWh battery, targeting a driving range of up to 692km (430 miles). This places it competitively within the high-end EV market, where range anxiety remains a significant consumer concern.
Drawing Inspiration from Jaguar’s Heritage
Jaguar’s design team revisited iconic models from its past – the E-Type, XJS, and XJ series – to inform the new vehicle’s development. Rawdon Glover, Jaguar managing director, stated that driving these historic cars provided “clear direction” for creating the brand’s most technologically advanced product yet. This approach suggests Jaguar is attempting to blend its storied history with cutting-edge EV technology.
A Strategic Repositioning
Jaguar’s strategy is not to compete directly with BMW or Audi, but rather to position itself as a rival to Porsche and Bentley. This signals a clear intention to move upmarket, focusing on higher prices, premium materials, and exceptional performance. The company has faced criticism in the past for its brand direction, but the new leadership appears committed to a decisive turnaround.
Leadership Changes and Future Outlook
Recent changes in leadership, including the departure of design boss Gerry McGovern (who is launching his own firm), suggest Jaguar is undergoing significant internal restructuring. The “complete reset” aims to streamline operations and refocus on core strengths.
Jaguar’s shift towards ultra-luxury EVs is a high-stakes gamble. If successful, it could reestablish the brand as a major player in the automotive world. Failure, however, could leave it struggling to survive in an increasingly competitive market.
