Kia’s latest entry into the electric vehicle market, the EV2, is poised to disrupt the affordable EV segment with its blend of practicality, technology, and competitive pricing. Positioned as a subcompact crossover, the EV2 aims to deliver the benefits of electric mobility to a wider audience without compromising on essential features.

Design and Dimensions

At 4.06 meters long, the EV2 is smaller than the Kia Stonic but offers a wider and lower stance. Its design echoes that of the larger EV5 and other Kia EVs, featuring a boxy silhouette and a modernized “tiger nose” front end. The overall aesthetic is modern and functional, appealing to buyers seeking a stylish yet understated vehicle.

Performance and Range

The EV2 will be available in two configurations. The Long Range model boasts a 61kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, targeting a range of approximately 281 miles, outperforming rivals like the Epiq and Renault 4. The Standard Range version, equipped with a smaller 42.2kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, delivers around 197 miles of range. Both variants utilize a 400V electrical architecture for fast charging (under 30 minutes for 10-80%) and include vehicle-to-grid/load capabilities.

All EV2 models feature a front-mounted motor and a torsion-beam rear axle, a cost-effective choice that doesn’t significantly impact handling. The Standard Range produces 145bhp, while the Long Range prioritizes efficiency with around 134bhp. Real-world testing demonstrates brisk acceleration (0-62mph in 8.7 seconds for the Standard Range) and smooth regenerative braking, including an “i-Pedal” mode for near-one-pedal driving.

Interior and Practicality

Despite its compact exterior, the EV2 provides surprising interior space. It offers five seats as standard, with an optional four-seater configuration featuring a sliding rear bench for added versatility. Rear passenger space is adequate for adults, though taller individuals might find headroom limited. Boot capacity stands at 362 liters, slightly less than the Renault 4 but ample for daily use, supplemented by underfloor storage. The cabin is well-equipped with dual 12.3-inch displays for instrumentation and infotainment, complemented by physical controls for climate and audio adjustments.

Kia has prioritized noise reduction with acoustic shielding under the frunk and motor, as well as optional thicker glass and acoustic tires, resulting in a refined and quiet driving experience.

Driving Dynamics

The EV2 handles urban environments with ease, thanks to its compact size and precise steering. While steering feedback is somewhat muted, the car maintains stability even on twisty roads. Suspension tuning favors comfort, effectively smoothing out minor road imperfections, though larger bumps can unsettle the ride. Overall, the EV2 strikes a balance between agility and comfort, making it suitable for both city commutes and longer journeys.

Pricing and Availability

The Standard Range EV2 is expected to launch in the UK around £25,000, with the Long Range model priced at approximately £30,000. Trim levels will likely mirror those of the EV3, including Air, GT-Line, and GT-Line S.
