Kia EV2: New Entry-Level Electric SUV Targets Europe’s Growing Market

21

Kia has unveiled the EV2, its smallest all-electric SUV, at the 2026 Brussels Motor Show. This model is designed to compete directly in Europe’s rapidly expanding city EV segment, offering a more affordable and compact option alongside Kia’s existing EV lineup.

Design and Dimensions

The EV2 shares design cues with the EV3 and EV9, but in a smaller package. Measuring 4060mm long, it’s 80mm shorter than the Renault 4 E-Tech – a key rival in this market. The rear styling ditches the complex tail lights seen in the Concept EV2 for a simpler, Hyundai Kona-like design.

Performance and Range

The EV2 is built on Kia’s E-GMP platform and will offer two battery options: a 42.2kWh standard range pack (WLTP range of 317km) and a 61.0kWh long range pack (WLTP range of 448km). Both variants are front-wheel drive, with power outputs of 107kW and 100kW, respectively.

Notably, the larger battery reduces acceleration speed (9.5 seconds to 100km/h) compared to the standard battery (8.6 seconds). The car’s suspension – a torsion beam at the rear – means all-wheel drive configurations are not available. Charging times are around 29-30 minutes using DC fast charging, and it supports both 11kW and 22kW AC charging.

Interior and Features

The EV2 offers both four- and five-seat configurations, with the four-seat option providing sliding rear seats to maximize cargo space (up to 403L). Boot space ranges from 332L in standard trim to 403L with seats adjusted. A small 15L frunk adds extra storage.

Inside, the EV2 features a dual 12.3-inch display setup for instrumentation and infotainment, running Kia’s ccNC Lite operating system with OTA updates. Physical controls for climate and audio are also included, alongside a 5.3-inch touchscreen for climate functions. Higher trims will offer an eight-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, smartphone integration, and digital key access.

Advanced Technology

The EV2 includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities, allowing it to power external devices or feed energy back into the grid. Safety features include autonomous emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, remote parking assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Production and Availability

Production of the standard range EV2 will begin in Žilina, Slovakia, in February. The long-range and GT-Line models will follow in June. However, Kia Australia has indicated that logistical and cost hurdles make local availability unlikely.

The EV2 represents Kia’s strategy to capture a larger share of the growing European EV market with an affordable, well-equipped, and compact electric SUV. By offering two battery options and a practical interior, it aims to appeal to urban drivers seeking a versatile and efficient electric vehicle.
