Kia has officially launched the highly anticipated 2027 EV3 in the United States at the New York Auto Show. This compact electric SUV marks a critical step for the brand, bringing a more accessible EV option to American buyers. Positioned above the smaller EV2 (not yet available in the US) but below the larger EV5 and EV9, the EV3 aims to disrupt the market with a projected starting price in the low-to-mid $30,000 range.
Bridging the Gap in Electric Vehicle Ownership
The EV3 fills a significant gap in Kia’s North American lineup. While other EVs from the brand—like the EV5 (sold in Canada, not yet the US) and the three-row EV9—have been available, they cater to different segments. The EV3 makes electric vehicle ownership viable for a broader audience seeking a more affordable and compact option. It’s not a stripped-down model, despite its accessible price point; instead, it leverages the same dedicated E-GMP EV platform as Kia’s higher-end electric offerings.
Performance and Range Options
The EV3 will offer two battery pack choices. The base 58.3 kWh pack, available exclusively on the entry-level Light trim, provides up to 220 miles (354 km) of EPA-estimated range. Upgrading to the 81.4 kWh battery (available on Wind and Land trims) extends the range to an estimated 320 miles (515 km) in front-wheel drive configuration. All-wheel drive is optional with the larger battery on Wind and Land, and standard on GT-Line and GT models.
Charging times are competitive, with a 10 to 80 percent recharge taking approximately 29 minutes with the smaller pack and slightly over 30 minutes with the larger one. Performance varies by trim, but even the base single-motor version is expected to deliver mid-seven-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration. Higher trims, including the GT, will boast up to 288 hp (292 PS / 215 kW), reducing the 0 to 60 mph time to around 5.5 seconds.
Tech-Forward Cabin and Features
Inside, the EV3 mirrors the modern aesthetic of other Kia models, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens and a 5-inch climate display. Kia’s Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) system integrates streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, Disney, and more. The EV3 also offers optional features such as a Harman Kardon audio system, panoramic roof, Digital Key, power liftgate, and 360-degree camera. Higher trims (GT-Line and GT) will include sport-tuned suspension, metal pedals, off-white dual-tone seats, and distinctive green accents.
A Strategic Play in a Shifting Market
The EV3 was initially planned as part of a broader expansion of smaller EVs into the US market, but Kia ultimately decided against bringing the EV4 and EV5. This makes the EV3 a pivotal model, arriving at a time when EV sales growth is slowing in the US. Kia’s success with this vehicle will depend on its ability to offer a compelling combination of affordability, range, and features in a competitive landscape.
The 2027 Kia EV3 is slated to arrive in dealerships late in 2026, with full trim details and pricing announced closer to the launch date. With its aggressive pricing and modern features, the EV3 has the potential to shake up the entry-level EV segment.
