Mercedes-AMG is signaling a return to its high-performance roots by developing a limited-run Mythos model heavily inspired by iconic Black Series cars like the CLK 63. The new vehicle, previewed in winter testing, is essentially a modern take on the brutally styled, V8-powered coupes that defined AMG’s aggressive identity in the 2000s.
A Throwback to Performance Heritage
The upcoming Mythos model is based on the CLE coupe, but pushes far beyond the capabilities of the existing CLE 53. Prototypes reveal a bespoke body with significantly wider arches—potentially even wider than the already aggressive CLE 53 AMG—and a reworked front end designed to maximize airflow for cooling.
The design cues are unmistakable: an aggressive aero package, including a high-mounted rear wing and the signature four trapezoidal exhaust tips of AMG’s V8 models. This isn’t just a performance upgrade; it’s a deliberate nod to the brand’s legacy.
Exclusive Mythos Lineage
The Mythos series represents AMG’s ultra-exclusive range, positioned well above standard production models. The first Mythos, the PureSpeed SL (limited to 250 units), replaced its windscreen with an F1-style “Halo,” demanding a hypercar-level price tag of around £700,000.
This new CLE-based model is expected to follow suit, offering high-end finishes, exclusive paint options, and a price that will easily exceed traditional AMG variants—and even the highly coveted Black Series. The interior will likely feature aggressive bucket seats, Alcantara trim, and extensive carbon fiber accents.
Why This Matters
Mercedes-AMG’s decision to embrace its V8 heritage with the Mythos series is significant. The move signals a response to shifting market trends where high-performance enthusiasts are increasingly demanding raw power and visceral driving experiences.
The Mythos line is not simply about building faster cars, but about cultivating exclusivity and desirability. By limiting production and pricing these vehicles in hypercar territory, AMG elevates the brand’s status while catering to a niche but affluent customer base. The revival of V8-powered AMG models also acknowledges the enduring appeal of these engines among performance enthusiasts, despite the industry’s push toward electrification.
The Mythos CLE 63 is poised to be an extreme performance statement, a reminder of AMG’s uncompromising past and a taste of its unapologetic future.
