Mercedes-Benz is expanding its iconic G-Wagen lineup with a new, smaller off-road vehicle – internally dubbed the “Baby G.” This model aims to deliver the legendary G-Class experience in a more accessible package, mirroring the relationship between the Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport. The move signifies a broader strategy to capitalize on the G-Wagen’s enduring appeal by offering a more affordable entry point.
A Genuine Off-Roader, Not Just a Style Exercise
Unlike some downsized SUVs that prioritize aesthetics over capability, Mercedes emphasizes that the “Baby G” will be a true off-road performer. This is confirmed by the automaker’s commitment to using a traditional body-on-frame chassis, mirroring the construction of the larger G-Class. This design choice is significant because it directly impacts durability and off-road performance. Body-on-frame construction is less common in modern SUVs, which increasingly favor unibody designs for lighter weight and efficiency.
Powertrain Options: Electric and Hybrid
Originally planned as an all-electric vehicle, Mercedes is now considering a hybrid powertrain option for key markets. The electric version will likely feature an 800-volt charging system and an estimated range exceeding 300 miles. The hybrid variant will leverage the existing 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the CLA, paired with an electric motor, producing around 188 horsepower. This flexibility in powertrain options allows Mercedes to cater to different consumer preferences and regulatory environments.
Design and Branding
The vehicle’s design will closely resemble a scaled-down G-Class, complete with rugged styling cues like plastic cladding, off-road tires, and potentially brush guards. While initially teased as the “Little G,” Mercedes is expected to adopt a naming convention similar to the electric G-Class (EQG), likely using a three-letter designation. The brand is keen on maintaining the vehicle’s distinct look.
Production and Pricing
Mercedes plans to begin production in 2027. Pricing estimates suggest a starting point between $55,000 and $65,000, significantly lower than the current G550 ($155,250) and G63 ($196,850). This price point makes the “Baby G” accessible to a wider range of buyers while still capitalizing on the brand’s prestige.
The decision to offer both electric and hybrid options, along with a more affordable price, demonstrates Mercedes’ commitment to broadening the G-Wagen’s appeal beyond its traditional luxury niche. This expansion could disrupt the mid-size off-road SUV segment by introducing a vehicle with proven off-road credentials and a recognizable brand identity.
