MG 4 EV Urban: Australia’s New Budget EV Contender Arriving in 2026

13

The MG 4 EV Urban is set to launch in Australia next month, entering a rapidly expanding market for affordable electric vehicles (EVs). This new hatchback will offer a more budget-friendly option alongside the existing MG 4, further intensifying competition with rivals like the BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora.

Key Specifications and Features

The MG 4 EV Urban will be available exclusively with front-wheel drive, differing from the existing MG 4 which offers rear- or all-wheel drive configurations. It will feature either a 43kWh or 54kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, though exact pricing and full specifications for the Australian market have yet to be announced.

The Urban model rides on MG’s new E3 platform, utilizing a torsion-beam rear suspension instead of the multi-link setup found in the standard MG 4. Its dimensions are slightly larger – 4395mm long, 1842mm wide, 1551mm tall, with a 2750mm wheelbase.

Inside, the MG 4 EV Urban will feature a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Standard equipment includes automatic LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a heat pump, automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a comprehensive suite of safety features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.

Performance and Range

The electric motor will deliver between 110kW and 118kW of power and 250Nm of torque, resulting in a 0-100km/h acceleration time of around 9.5 to 9.6 seconds. The battery is designed for fast charging, with a claimed 30-minute charge time from 10% to 80% on a 150kW DC fast-charger, and supports 11kW AC charging.

WLTP-rated range will vary based on the battery size: 325km with the smaller pack and between 405km and 416km with the larger one. Boot capacity is generous, ranging from 568 to 577 liters, expanding to 1364 liters with the rear seats folded.

Market Positioning and Competition

The MG 4 EV Urban is positioned to undercut the existing MG 4 by a significant margin, with pricing expected to be closer to $30,000 than $40,000. This makes it a direct competitor to the BYD Dolphin Essential ($29,990), which currently holds the title for the most affordable electric hatchback in Australia.

The broader EV landscape is becoming increasingly crowded, with additional models from GAC (Aion UT), Geely (EX2), and Chery expected to arrive in 2026. The BYD Atto 1 ($23,990) remains a benchmark for low-cost EVs, though its smaller size may not appeal to all buyers.

The arrival of the MG 4 EV Urban signals a new phase in Australia’s EV market: a race to the bottom in pricing, with manufacturers pushing hard to capture budget-conscious buyers. This trend is driven by the rising cost of living and fluctuating petrol prices, making EVs an increasingly attractive alternative.

The MG 4 EV Urban is expected to arrive in Australia in April 2026, providing another compelling option for consumers seeking affordable and efficient electric transportation.
