MG to Challenge BYD with New Affordable EV: The MG 2

9

MG Motor is preparing to enter the competitive small EV market with the MG 2, a model designed to rival the popular BYD Atto 1. The automaker’s British division confirmed the upcoming vehicle, citing the success of the Renault 5 as a key influence in their decision.

Competitive Landscape and Pricing Strategy

The MG 2 is positioned as a direct competitor to the BYD Atto 1, currently Australia’s most affordable new EV at $23,990 before on-road costs. Unlike some manufacturers focused solely on the lowest possible price, MG intends to prioritize overall value.

According to David Allison, head of product and planning at MG Motor UK, the MG 2 will aim for a pricing sweet spot—offering features and performance competitive with larger, more expensive vehicles. He suggests the MG 2 will follow a similar strategy to the MG ZS, which provides Qashqai-sized practicality at Juke-level prices.

Technical Details and Platform

The MG 2 will utilize the same Modular Scalable Platform as the existing MG 4, ensuring cost-effectiveness and efficient development. This shared architecture will allow MG to leverage existing manufacturing processes and keep production costs down.

Australian Market and Expansion Plans

While MG Motor Australia has not yet confirmed the MG 2 for local availability, the company is actively expanding its EV lineup. Alongside the MG 2, Australian consumers can expect the arrival of a front-wheel-drive version of the MG 4 in 2026, as well as the mid-size MG S6 EV.

MG also offers a range of other EVs in Australia, including the MG 4, MG S5, Cyberster roadster, and models from its IM Presented by MG Motor sub-brand (IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV).

The MG 2 represents a strategic move by MG to capture a larger share of the growing EV market. By focusing on value rather than simply the lowest price, the company aims to appeal to a broader range of consumers seeking an affordable yet feature-rich electric vehicle.
