Subaru’s New Electric SUV, Uncharted, Confirmed for Australia in 2026

Subaru has officially confirmed the launch of its Uncharted electric SUV in Australia by mid-2026. This model is poised to become the most affordable EV in Subaru’s lineup, expanding the brand’s presence in the growing electric vehicle market. The announcement comes as automakers worldwide race to deliver competitive EVs, and Subaru is entering this arena with a compelling offering.

Twin to Toyota’s C-HR+, Competitive Pricing

The Uncharted shares its platform with the Toyota C-HR+ electric SUV, though the Toyota model won’t arrive in Australia until 2027. This collaboration allows both companies to leverage development costs and offer a competitive vehicle in the compact SUV segment. The Uncharted will directly compete with popular models like the Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and BYD Atto 3.

This move is significant because Subaru’s current electric offerings, the Solterra and bZ4X, start at higher price points ($63,990 and $55,990 respectively), making the Uncharted a more accessible option for many buyers.

Performance and Range

The Uncharted boasts a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system, including Subaru’s signature X-Mode and Downhill Assist Control. Its powertrain delivers a combined 252kW of power, enabling a 0–100km/h acceleration in just 5.0 seconds. The 74.7kWh CATL battery provides a claimed driving range of up to 522km (WLTP), addressing a key concern for potential EV buyers – range anxiety.

Fast charging capabilities are also included, with DC fast charging up to 150kW allowing a charge from 10-80% in just 30 minutes. The vehicle also features 1500W vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, adding utility for camping or power outages.

Interior and Tech

Inside, the Uncharted features a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Dual wireless phone chargers are standard. Importantly, Subaru has addressed recent criticism of over-reliance on touchscreens by retaining physical buttons and controls for key functions.

Safety features are comprehensive, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a surround-view camera system.

Broader EV Strategy

The Uncharted is one of three new electric SUVs Subaru will introduce to Australia in 2026. The larger Trailseeker, based on the Toyota bZ4X Touring, will arrive by June, and Subaru has teased a fourth electric model to be revealed on April 1.

Subaru Australia’s managing director, Scott Lawrence, has emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding both its EV and hybrid lineups, as well as establishing the Wilderness sub-brand locally. This expansion comes amid a 3.9% sales decline in 2025, suggesting a strategic shift to regain market share.

Subaru’s entry into the affordable EV segment with the Uncharted is a critical step towards broader EV adoption in Australia. By offering a competitive price point and strong performance, Subaru aims to capture a larger share of the growing electric vehicle market.
