Peugeot has unveiled the Polygon concept car, a radical vision that previews the design and technology direction for its upcoming next-generation 208 hatchback. While visually inspired by the iconic Peugeot 205, the Polygon is fundamentally about future mobility, notably introducing steer-by-wire technology to the brand’s popular model line.
The “Polygon” moniker stems from its most distinctive feature: a rectangular steering wheel. This unconventional design isn’t just for show; it signals a dramatic departure from traditional steering systems. Unlike conventional setups where the steering wheel directly connects to the front wheels, the Polygon utilizes electronic connections – essentially replacing mechanical linkage with an electrical signal.
This steer-by-wire system unlocks exciting possibilities within the car’s cabin. The high positioning of the compact steering wheel, combined with the absence of a traditional instrument cluster, allows for a fully reimagined dashboard layout. Crucially, vital information is projected directly onto the windscreen from within the dashboard itself – essentially creating a virtual display space equivalent to a 31-inch touchscreen.
The narrow profile of this futuristic steering wheel ensures unobstructed visibility of this augmented reality display. Meanwhile, climate control functions are managed through a compact screen integrated atop the iDrive-style dial controller on the central console.
Peugeot highlights the advantages of its steer-by-wire system in terms of both driver feel and space efficiency. At low speeds, the system achieves full steering lock with just 170 degrees of rotation – effectively requiring only one full turn of the wheel to go from lock to lock, compared to three turns in the current 208. This contributes to a sense of “hyper-agility” Peugeot claims, while the system automatically adjusts its response rate at higher speeds for increased stability.
This steering innovation is poised to become a hallmark of Peugeot’s future vehicles, as CEO Alain Favey previously stated: “This quickness in steering will be key to the dynamic identity of the brand going forward.”
The Polygon concept offers a compelling glimpse into how Peugeot envisions its future – blending retro cues with cutting-edge technology to deliver a driving experience that prioritizes driver engagement and intuitive control. It suggests a significant evolution for both the 208 itself and Peugeot’s broader product strategy, showcasing their ambition to be at the forefront of automotive innovation.
