Tesla is expanding its lineup with the Model Y L, a longer, seven-seat version of its best-selling electric SUV in Australia. Orders are now open, with deliveries slated for the second half of 2026. This move addresses a gap in the market for electric SUVs that can comfortably accommodate larger families without forcing them into more expensive options.
Key Specs and Pricing
The Model Y L comes in a single Premium AWD trim, priced at $74,900 before on-road costs—a $6,000 premium over the standard Model Y Premium Long Range AWD. Despite the extra space, Tesla has kept the powertrain competitive, with a 378kW/590Nm dual-motor setup and an impressive WLTP range of 681km, exceeding the existing Model Y by over 80 kilometers.
The vehicle also introduces Tesla’s first vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability in the region, allowing up to 3.3kW of power output for external devices. Adaptive damping with selectable modes further enhances ride comfort.
Interior and Space
The most significant change is the addition of a third row of seating, complete with heating, ISOFIX anchors, USB-C ports, and foldable functionality. The second row now features captain’s chairs instead of a bench, offering enhanced comfort with heating, ventilation, and power adjustment. An 8-inch entertainment screen for rear passengers adds to the luxury.
Tesla claims the cabin provides a flat loading surface when the rear seats are folded, maximizing cargo space. The Model Y L is 44mm taller and 177mm longer than the standard Model Y, with a 150mm extended wheelbase.
Competition and Market Position
The Model Y L stands out as one of the most affordable seven-seat electric SUVs currently available. Its main competitors include the Mercedes-Benz EQB and the larger Kia EV9, both of which carry higher starting prices ($90,000 and $97,000 respectively). This positions Tesla to capture a significant share of the family EV market.
Safety and Warranty
The Model Y L retains the five-star ANCAP safety rating of the standard Model Y. It comes standard with nine airbags, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot assist, and lane-keep assist.
Tesla backs the Model Y L with a five-year unlimited-kilometer warranty and five years of roadside assistance. The battery is covered by an eight-year/192,000km warranty, guaranteeing at least 70% capacity retention over the period.
The arrival of the Tesla Model Y L fills a crucial niche in the electric SUV market, offering a practical, well-equipped, and relatively affordable solution for larger families seeking zero-emission transportation. This expansion further solidifies Tesla’s dominance in the EV space, particularly in markets like Australia where demand for spacious electric vehicles is growing.
