Toyota has unveiled a refreshed version of the Corolla for the Chinese market, featuring updated styling and increased interior space. However, Australian buyers will not see this model in showrooms; instead, they’ll receive the next-generation Corolla, slated for a 2027 release.
China’s Updated Corolla: Styling and Space
The Chinese-market update brings Toyota’s latest “hammerhead” front-end design – already seen on vehicles like the RAV4 and Camry – to the Corolla sedan. This aggressive styling aims to modernize the car’s appearance and align it with Toyota’s global design language. Beyond aesthetics, the update includes a 50mm longer wheelbase, resulting in a more spacious cabin. Overall length is increased by 75mm, offering tangible benefits for rear-seat passengers.
Inside, the facelifted Corolla gains a revised center console, updated gear selector, and a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen for infotainment. The engine options remain conventional: a 2.0-liter petrol engine or a 1.8-liter hybrid with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery technology.
Australia’s Path: Next-Generation Model in 2027
Australian Toyota fans will bypass the Chinese facelift altogether. The local market is set to receive the all-new, 13th-generation Corolla, previewed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. This model will be sourced from Japan and is expected to offer a wider range of powertrains, including hybrid, electric, and potentially hydrogen fuel-cell options depending on the market.
Toyota frequently tailors Corolla variants for different regions. The European Corolla, for example, differs in design from the Australian model. The Chinese market also receives alternate versions under the Levin and Allion brands. This regional customization is common practice in the automotive industry, allowing manufacturers to adapt to local preferences and regulations.

While Australian buyers miss out on the facelifted sedan, Toyota has confirmed the arrival of an updated GR Corolla hot hatch in early 2026. This performance-focused variant will bring a more engaging driving experience to Australian roads.
