A custom-built Toyota Corolla, inspired by a fan rendering and fueled by an employee’s passion, is competing in the grueling Mint 400 off-road race. The vehicle, dubbed the “AWDROLA,” demonstrates the surprising potential of front-wheel-drive Toyota platforms. This isn’t just another show car; it’s a testament to what happens when automotive enthusiasm meets real-world racing.
From Instagram Rendering to Desert Racer
The project began with a digital rendering by artist @stevoform, depicting an AE86 Corolla as a high-performance desert runner. Randy Wimenta, an employee at KC Hilites, an off-road lighting company, saw the image and decided to make it real. The starting point was a 1989 Corolla coupe, a model often overshadowed by the more celebrated AE86. Wimenta’s goal was to prove that these later Corollas could be just as capable.
The Build: Combining Performance and Durability
The build wasn’t easy. It required merging parts from two donor vehicles and extensive modification. The finished product boasts a robust suspension setup with Bilstein and Eibach components, Raceline wheels fitted with BFGoodrich K02 off-road tires, and a full rack for spare tires. Given Wimenta’s role at KC Hilites, the car is also equipped with a complete set of auxiliary lights for nighttime racing.
Why This Matters: Redefining Toyota’s Legacy
The AWDROLA’s build is significant for two main reasons: first, it showcases the untapped potential of front-wheel-drive Corollas, which often get overlooked in favor of the more iconic rear-wheel-drive AE86. Second, it proves that even everyday vehicles can be transformed into serious off-road competitors. The project serves as an alternative to the racing heritage of the Toyota Celica, which many fans hope will return as a WRC rally car.
Mint 400: The Ultimate Test
This weekend, the AWDROLA will compete in the Mint 400, a 400-mile off-road race near Las Vegas. The vehicle is entered in the Gambler/Hooptie-X Modified class, where it will face extreme terrain, including sand dunes and rocky landscapes. While AE86s have conquered mountain roads in Japan, few have been tested against desert conditions. The AWDROLA must survive both jumps and rattlesnakes to succeed.
The Mint 400’s brutal conditions make it a unique challenge. The race inspired Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and its intensity is well-known among off-road enthusiasts.
➡️ Results can be tracked on the Mint 400 website, proving that passion for Toyotas extends beyond the usual models into something truly extraordinary. The AWDROLA blends the spirit of Initial D and Back to the Future, creating a desert-ready machine unlike any other.
