Volvo Prioritizes Rugged EX60 Cross Country Over Coupe-SUV Variant

12

Volvo has decided against developing a coupe-SUV version of its EX60 electric vehicle, instead focusing on a more robust, off-road-oriented Cross Country model set to launch next year. This decision positions Volvo distinctly from competitors like BMW and Audi, which offer coupe-style versions of their electric SUVs.

Coupe SUV Demand Questioned

While the EX60’s platform could technically support a coupe variant – similar to BMW’s upcoming iX4 and Audi’s Q6 Sportback – Volvo’s product line owner, Akhil Krishnan, confirmed that this isn’t in the current plan. The company already offers a coupe version of its smaller EX40 model (the EC40), but doesn’t see the same market potential for a larger, sleeker EX60.

This contrasts with BMW, which is moving ahead with the iX4, and Audi, which already provides a Sportback version of the Q6. Mercedes-Benz, notably, is unlikely to offer a coupe version of its electric GLC, despite having one for its gasoline-powered counterpart.

EX60 Cross Country Details

The EX60 Cross Country will be positioned as a more premium, adventurous option. It’s expected to cost roughly £3,000 more than the standard EX60 and features:
– Off-road-inspired exterior cladding
– Reinforced steel skid plates (front and rear)
– A distinctive steel “Cross Country” badge
– Adjustable air suspension, raising or lowering the vehicle by 20mm.

Legacy of Cross Country Branding

Volvo’s Cross Country line dates back to 1997 with the V70, establishing itself as a badge for vehicles designed for more challenging terrain. The name has since been applied to models like the V40, V60, S60, and V90, and currently appears on the EX30. Volvo has no plans to go smaller in its model range, as Krishnan stated there’s no premium market for vehicles below the EX30’s size.

The EX60 Cross Country represents a strategic move for Volvo, emphasizing practicality and rugged capability over the trend toward sportier, coupe-SUV designs. This approach reinforces Volvo’s established identity, while acknowledging the ongoing market demand for versatile, all-weather vehicles.
