Kia EV3 GT: Performance Boost for Compact Electric Crossover

4

Kia has expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of high-performance GT variants across several models, including the new EV3 GT. This marks the first time an all-wheel-drive dual-motor system has been offered on the EV3, promising enhanced driving dynamics without sacrificing range or practicality.

Power and Performance

The EV3 GT combines a 194bhp front motor with a newly added rear motor, resulting in a total output of 288bhp. This configuration allows the crossover to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, making it competitive within its class. While not the fastest in its segment (rivals like Volvo EX30 Performance and Smart #1 Brabus offer quicker acceleration), Kia emphasizes that the GT focuses on driving engagement rather than outright speed.

Enhanced Driving Experience

Key to this engagement is the Virtual Gear Shift (VGS) system, borrowed from the EV6 GT. Using steering wheel-mounted paddles, the VGS mimics the feel of a combustion engine by simulating gear changes and adjusting throttle mapping. Though Kia has not confirmed the specific engine simulation, this feature aims to provide a more visceral driving experience.

Additionally, the EV3 GT features adaptive dampers tuned for performance and larger 20-inch wheels with performance-oriented tires. Subtle styling tweaks, including revised bumpers and a slightly lowered stance, further distinguish the GT from standard EV3 models. Inside, new, more supportive seats and GT-specific trim options add to the premium feel.

Range and Charging

Kia has yet to publish official range figures for the EV3 GT, but it’s expected that efficiency will be slightly reduced compared to the single-motor long-range EV3 (which achieves around 375 miles). The added weight and drag from the dual-motor setup and performance tires will contribute to this difference. Charging times remain consistent with other EV3 models, allowing a 10-80% charge in approximately 31 minutes.

Availability and Pricing

Production of the EV3 GT is scheduled to begin in the coming months, with UK deliveries expected this summer. Pricing is anticipated to be only slightly higher than the EV3 GT-Line S, which currently costs around £44,000.

The EV3 GT represents Kia’s commitment to delivering engaging electric driving experiences in a compact and accessible package. While it may not break acceleration records, the combination of all-wheel drive, performance-tuned suspension, and the unique VGS system positions it as a compelling option for drivers seeking a more spirited EV crossover.
