Who Actually Designed the VW Beetle?
You probably know the story. Ferdinand Porsche. Adolf Hitler. The People’s Car.

The Beetle’s iconic shape didn’t come from Porsche’s initial sketch. It came from Bela Barenyi, an engineer who beat Porsche to the punch by five years. Barenyi is the unsung hero behind the “crumple zone” concept and the rigid passenger cell. Without him, safety standards might look very different today.
Hitler had specific demands for a “People’s Car.” It needed to carry two adults and three kids at 60 mph. The price tag had to be lower than a motorcycle. The Schlörwagen: Too Ugly to Survive
The Schlörwagen looks like a secret weapon. It resembles something that would be studied in a black site rather than a dealership.
Engineer Karl Schlor from the Aerodynamic Research Institute designed it. Only one prototype ever rolled off the line. It sat on a Mercedes 170H chassis, but the body? That was aluminum, forged by the Ludewig Brothers. Yes, the same guys who built the bizarre Opel Blitz “Aero” bus in 1938.
The stats were impressive. The drag coefficient hit an astonishing 0.186. Top speed? 84 mph. Faster than the base Mercedes.

Kleinschnittger F125: Cooking Pots as Car Parts
After WWII, resources were scarce. Tinkerer Paul Kleinschnittger didn’t let that stop him. He built a prototype using recycled metal, bicycle wheels, and parts ripped from crashed airplanes. By 1949 it was ready. The windshield? Salvaged from a fighter jet.
A German businessman saw potential. He funded a small factory. But the prototype was too small. It needed redesigning.

Michael Hoffman was a shop foreman in Munich. After the war, he got an idea. Build a car from junk.
The Hoffman didn’t have to follow the rules. Why? Because it was small. Tiny, actually. It featured rear-wheel steering, which makes sense if your vehicle looks like a box with wheels. The engine was small. The frame was a large rectangle housing complex lever systems.
Inside, it was cramped. The mechanicals took up so much space there was barely room for a driver. But the incentives were real. Three wheels meant no tax. No driving license required.
Did it sell? No. It was too weird. Too cramped. Too strange. Only one was ever built. It sits today in the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville. The rest? Gone.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL: A Brief Mention
