Ferrari Refines the Purosangue with New ‘Handling Speciale’ Package

Ferrari is doubling down on its foray into the high-performance SUV market. While the Purosangue has already established itself as a uniquely driver-centric crossover—thanks to its naturally aspirated V12 and sports car-derived chassis—the Maranello-based manufacturer has introduced the Handling Speciale package. This optional upgrade aims to sharpen the vehicle’s reflexes and intensify its sensory experience without sacrificing its core identity as a usable four-door.

Sharper Dynamics and Improved Control

The primary objective of the Handling Speciale package is to enhance the car’s agility. Because the Purosangue carries significant mass—exceeding 2,000 kg (4,410 lbs) —managing body roll and weight transfer is critical to maintaining a sports car feel.

To address this, Ferrari has implemented several mechanical and software refinements:

  • Revised Suspension Calibration: The active suspension system has been recalibrated to reduce body movement by 10 percent. This results in a flatter cornering attitude and more precise responses during rapid direction changes.
  • Aggressive Gear Shifts: The transmission software has been tuned for faster, more assertive shifts, particularly when operating in Race or ESC Off modes. In manual mode, the shifts become even more dramatic once the engine climbs above 5,500 rpm.

These updates do not alter the core performance figures—the car still reaches 0–62 mph in 3.3 seconds with a top speed exceeding 193 mph (310 km/h) —but they aim to make the power delivery feel more immediate and visceral.

A More Vocal V12 Experience

One of the most significant, albeit less technical, improvements focuses on the auditory experience. For many enthusiasts, the raw sound of a V12 is the soul of a Ferrari. Ferrari claims the Handling Speciale package makes the 6.5-liter V12 more vocal during startup and under heavy acceleration.

While the manufacturer has not disclosed the exact mechanical changes, it is likely a combination of software adjustments and potential hardware tweaks, such as revised exhaust resonance, designed to bring more of the engine’s natural symphony into the cabin.

Subtle Aesthetic Enhancements

The package also includes several visual cues to distinguish the “Speciale” models from the standard Purosangue. These changes are designed to be sophisticated rather than ostentatious:

  • Exterior: Diamond-cut finished wheels, carbon-fiber side shields, matte black exhaust tips, and a black rear Prancing Horse badge.
  • Detailing: Satin exterior script and a dedicated interior plaque.

Why This Matters

The introduction of the Handling Speciale package highlights a broader trend in the ultra-luxury segment: the pursuit of hyper-specialization.

Even within a single model line, manufacturers are increasingly offering “sub-tiers” of performance. By offering a package that focuses on “feel” and “sound” rather than just raw horsepower, Ferrari is acknowledging that for its clientele, the emotional connection to the driving experience is just as important as the technical specifications. This move allows Ferrari to cater to the most demanding drivers who want a more aggressive edge without needing a dedicated track car.

The Handling Speciale package transforms the Purosangue from a highly capable luxury crossover into a more visceral, sensory-driven driving machine through refined suspension, sharper shifting, and an enhanced exhaust note.
