But there’s one number that most buyers don’t notice until it’s too late.
This is the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).
Ignore it at your peril. It’s not just bureaucracy. This is the manufacturer’s hard limit on how much weight one axle can realistically carry. The front axle is equipped with a unique GAWR. Rear axles have their own. These limits are not recommendations. They are structural ceilings. Once you get past them, it becomes a gamble with physics.
Difference Between GAWR and GAW
This is where people stumble. It is necessary to distinguish between the rating and the reality.
GAWR is static. This has been determined by the factory design team. This represents the maximum allowable weight that can be placed on a particular axle.
GAW (Gross Axle Weight) is dynamic. This is the actual weight on that axle.
The GAW changes every time the vehicle is loaded. GAWR never changes.
Imagine a pickup truck with four 100-pound rocks. Total weight is 400 lbs. When unloaded, the GAW drops 400 pounds. When reloading, GAW increases by 400 pounds. In both cases, the GAWR remains exactly the same. This is a fixed ceiling. Actual load will vary.

What happens if too much weight is placed on the rear axle?
Your steering becomes numb. Front tire grip and responsiveness decrease. The braking system fails because the front brake did most of the work. It cannot compensate for the heavy load on the rear.
The rear tires may blow out from the stress. Suspension parts can be bent or damaged. lose control. On the motorway, you are responsible for everyone.

Where can I find GAWR?
No need to guess. This information is built into the vehicle.
Look for the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door frame. This is usually where the door latch is located. The label lists the GAWR for the front and rear axles.
If you can’t find the sticker or the used car you bought doesn’t have it, search online. Most manufacturers publish this information. This is public information.

By 2009, there were 1,918 front and 1,676 rear John Cooper Works hardtops. The JCW Clubman has a 1929 front wheel and an 1863 rear wheel. These are exact figures. If you are tuning a JCW, you need to pay attention to the rear axle.
Check the tire sidewall. Tire load ratings must match or exceed the GAWR of the specific axle configuration.
Mitsubishi GAWR
There’s more to the 2006 Mitsubishi lineup than just model numbers. it hid the actual axle limits. The Raider was the only one whose GAWR data is publicly available. In 2007, things changed. The Altima dropped off. The Frontier weighs 3296/3197 lbs. The Titan showed up with 3300/3800 pounds. The Versa and Maxima remained silent.
In 2008, Frontier and Titan figures remained stable. Rogue appears, but no specs. The Murano and Pathfinder were still empty slots.

Pontiac was tight-lipped. In 2006 the Torrent listed with 2535/2535 pounds. G6, GTO, Grand Prix, Montana SV6, Solstice, Vibe? Nothing.
In 2007, the Grand Prix returned with a strange result of 62/38. Probably a typo or a specific trim code. G5 and Solstice are empty. The Torrent held its 2535/2535 line.
The G8 join the party. No numbers. There are no numbers. The G6 and G5 remained empty. Torrents will still appear in the list, but some formats may not display their previous numbers or may appear in other formats. The data is inconsistent here.
In 2009, G8 and Grand Prix were removed from the list. There are no specifications yet for the G5 and G6. The Torrent is the only Pontiac to re-earn the GAWR rating with a front and rear curb weight of 2535 lbs.

Porsche GAWR
Porsche does not list GAWR numbers for 2006. The Cayenne is one of them. There are no numbers.
Nothing has changed for 2008. The 911, Boxster, Cayenne and Cayman are all available. All empty.
The same pattern continues in 2009. 911 Carrera, Boxster, Cayenne, Cayman. Zero load. Porsche seems to think you already know the limits or they just haven’t published them in this form.

Suzuki is one of the few brands willing to share information. In 2006, Elio weighed 1918/1940 kilos. Forenza was held in 1918/1764. The XL7 weighs in at 2205/2866 lbs. Grand Vitara and Reno are both empty.
In 2007, Elio and Forenza remained stable. The XL7 weighs 2590/2921 lbs. The new SX4 has a launch weight of 2050/1786 lbs.
Aero and SX4 specs were discontinued in 2008. Forenza is still 1918/1764. XL7 stays at 2590/2921.

Volvo axle restrictions and safety requirements
GAWR is more than just a number on a sticker. This is a hard limit that each axle can withstand before it bends, breaks, or in the worst case scenario fails. Volvo information is scarce for the first few years, but later models will provide the information you need.
2006 and 2007 models
In the mid-2000s, Volvo’s range consisted of sedans and station wagons. GAWR data for the C70, S40, S60, V50 and V70 are not listed in these tables. That doesn’t mean they don’t have limits. This means that they are not captured by the source data.
The exceptions are the large haulers.

If you drive a 2006 S80, the rear axle carries a heavier load. Just over 2,200 lbs. Depending on how you look at it, the XC90 is a frame-mounted or heavy unibody platform, adding even more weight. The XC90’s rear suspension is rated for 3,150 lbs. This is important. Designed for towing trailers and transporting heavy loads.

By 2008, Volvo had tweaked the V70 and XC70 platforms. The numbers change, sometimes dramatically.

Notice the V70? The front axle is actually higher than the rear axle. 2,690 vs. 2,513. That’s unusual for a front-wheel-drive chassis, unless engine placement or suspension geometry dictates you. The XC70 returned with a high front score, but the rear score dropped to 2,646. The XC90 stays put. 2,820 up front. The rear is 3150.

Why are these numbers important?
You might think that GAWR is only for truck drivers. It’s not. It affects tire selection. Affects suspension upgrades. If you’re switching to stiffer coils or bigger brakes, you need to know your baseline. The Gross Axle Weight Rating tells exactly where the factory’s factory line is.
Exceeding the V70’s rear axle GAWR (2,513 lbs) is easier than you think. Add a heavy aftermarket exhaust system, a full tank of gas, 5 passengers and a loaded trailer hitch. You’re over the limit. The suspension bottoms out. Tire wear is uneven. Stability is lost.
For the XC90, the rear rating is 3,150 lbs. It has room to breathe. But the front is only 2,
