Alfa Romeo dropped a hint. Just a tease really. And no, it wasn’t the Stelvio successor we were dying for.
Emanuele Cappellano, Stellantis’ COO, made an appearance at the National Automotive Industry Roundable in Italy. Boring name? Maybe. The reveal though, that was disappointing. One single image floated out into the internet.
A new C-segment SUV. Sitting on the Stellantis STLA Medium platform.
That’s code for: it is not replacing the Stelvio.
The current Stelvio rides on the STLA Large platform. This new car is smaller. It’s meant to slot somewhere between the existing Tonale and whatever second-generation Stelvio is coming later. Since the European Junior exists, putting this below the Tonase doesn’t make sense. It will probably get a fresh name.
Alfa Romeo confirms multiple powertrain options: mild hybrid, plug-in, and fully electric.
Not all flavors might make it to the US. Standard industry practice, right? We don’t know the exact size yet, but the platform also hosts the Jeep Compass, Lancia Ypsilon, and Peugeot 308. It’s a mid-tier crossover.
Design comes from Turin so expect it to be good. The teaser showed a slanted rear window. A rakish line. Great for shows, potentially terrible for hauling groceries. We’ll have to see.
The Production Timeline
They are building this thing in Melfi, Italy. Production starts late 2027. Fourth quarter specifically.
The current Giulia and Stelvie models stay on the line until then. Then they go away. Replacements should finally arrive. Maybe. The Tonale was refreshed recently but might get redesigned too. 2027 is a busy year.
Bottega Fuoriserie has also teased a Maserati-collaborated sports car. Details? Basically zero.
The real question remains. Does Alfa need another crossover to survive in the American market?
Probably not. The brand ethos lives in the Giulia and the Stelvio. Those models aren’t just on the back burner. They’re cold. Without the proper replacements landing soon, relevance fades. Two years is a long time to wait.
What’s the plan B if the hype doesn’t stick?
