A pickup truck from Genesis isn’t dead. It’s just waiting.
For years, the luxury brand hinted at the idea. They even built a mockup. Then they stopped. But Hyundai executives are now saying a luxury truck could be on the table again.
The catch? It has to be truly luxurious. Not just a Hyundai with a new badge slapped on the grill.
Why Genesis Might Build A Luxury Pickup Now
Genesis executives aren’t rushing into this. Gavin Donaldson, Hyundai Motor Group Australia’s COO, told Carsales that the brand would only build a truck if it strengthened the luxury image.
“If there’s an opportunity that it’s goign to be able to create, build the platform, support the brand… then you would look at what it is.”
That’s a careful quote. It means the truck must earn the Genesis name.
Right now, Hyundai is working on its own mid-size pickup. When that lands, Genesis might share the platform. This happens all the time in the automotive world. Kia gets a base model. Genesis adds leather, better tech, and a higher price tag.
The foundation would already be there.
How The Platform Strategy Works
Hyundai plans to use either Kia’s body-on-frame architecture or tech from their GM partnership. Maybe a hybrid powertrain. Maybe more.
If that Hyundai truck sells well, Genesis has less risk. They’ve seen the market. They know people pay premium prices for high-end trucks. The segment is small, yes. But the buyers have money.
Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’ design chief, said in 2024 that the project was shelved. He called it “exploring early concepts.” That sounded like a no. Donaldson’s recent comments sound like a maybe.
Which brings us to the real question.
Is a luxury pickup just a rebadged work truck? Or is it something more?
What Comes First: The Truck Or The Magma?
Forget the truck for a minute. Genesis has bigger fish to fry.
They are pushing hard into the Magma performance lineup. Think fast cars. Sharp styling. Halo vehicles like the production version of the X Gran Coupe concept.
These are the cars that get people into the showroom. The truck? It’s a distant possibility.
Don’t expect a Genesis pickup soon. Maybe not ever.
Hyundai still has to launch its own mid-size truck first. That takes time. Engineering, testing, manufacturing. All of it. And if it fails, Genesis won’t follow.
But if it succeeds? The math changes.
A Genesis pickup might sound silly. It feels wrong. Why put luxury seats in a bed that carries lumber?
Except in the US, it makes perfect sense. Buyers want comfort. They want status. They want a truck that looks good parked at the golf course.
If Hyundai does the heavy lifting, Genesis just adds the polish.
Will It Actually Happen?
There’s no official approval. No launch date. Just talk.
Donaldson didn’t say “yes.” He didn’t say “no.” He left the door open.
The Hyundai truck comes first. If it uses a solid frame and hybrid tech, the path is clear. Genesis can borrow the bones. Then they wrap it in luxury.

The idea isn’t gone. It’s just paused. Waiting for the right moment. Waiting for the right platform.
