What GAWR Actually Means
GAWR is the maximum weight the manufacturer says you can place on a single axle. Not the whole vehicle. Not the payload capacity. Just one axle. Front and rear axles each have their own specific GAWR.
Think of it as a weight limit for that specific component. The automaker engineers the axle, its bearings, its suspension, and its tires to handle a specific load. Go beyond that number, and you are operating outside the safety envelope.
The definition of GAWR sounds simple, but the components that add up to that weight are often overlooked. It includes:
- The vehicle’s own curb weight
- Passengers
- Cargo in the trunk or bed

BMW
The Bavarian lineup from this era ranges from nimble coupes to heavy luxury tanks. The numbers tell a story of weight distribution.
