Confession: I Don’t Get The 911 Lineup

23

Someone asked me recently to pin down where the GT3 actually fits in the Porsche range.

Easy. It is the best driver’s version.

But then came the catch. Didn’t they have a GT2 for the hardcore crowd?

I paused.

Well, yes. They did. It was basically a GT3 chassis married to a Turbo engine. A franken-car, sort of. But you can’t buy one right now. Gone.

Then the conversation twisted further. There was, or is, also the GT3 RS. The actual hardcore model. Focus suspension, a snappy naturally aspirated engine. The real deal.

You can’t get that one either.

It is all getting kind of circular, isn’t it?

What ends up feeling like a straightforward hierarchy is more like a scattered menu of what used to exist, what exists in spirit, and what you might eventually get to hold the keys of.
