MG’s quiet win in BYD’s loud month

MG Motor Australia doesn’t mind losing the headlines.

While the industry obsesses over BYD nearly dethroning Toyota in June, MG is looking at its own lane. Respectfully.

“They deserve this success,” MG Marketing Director Dimitri Andreatidis says.

He isn’t wrong. BYD had a massive month. 18,8881 units delivered. A jump from 8,211 in May. They got within 243 units of the market leader. That is wild. But MG isn’t watching the scoreboard. Not really. They are focused on dealers and customers. And that focus paid off.

Numbers over noise

MG finished ninth in June.

But wait.

They beat Chery. 5,001 sales. Up 28.4% year over year. That puts them in a stronger position than before. Their first half sales are up 6.8%. Quietly. Consistently.

Is there any glory in ninth place?

Depends on who you ask. MG thinks yes. They are bolstering the product lineup. Trying to resonate with Australian buyers who want value and reliability without the hype cycle.

The ZS leads the charge. 1,827 units sold.

It is down slightly from last year though. The small SUV segment is a warzone. MG used to rule it. Now? They are sixth.

Behind them: Hyundai Kona, BYD Atto 2, GWM Haval Jolon, Chery Tiggo 4, and the new Jaecoo J5.

Competitive? Hell yes.

But MG has answers.

The new MG 4 EV Urban hatch started strong. 1,015 sales.

That puts it just 22 units behind the segment-leading Toyota Corolla. A respectable debut. Then there is the MG 3.

Price does a lot of lifting

The petrol and hybrid MG 3 sold 898 units.

It topped the light car segment. It beat the BYD Atto 3. Why? Price.

July sees a $1,000 cut.

Starting at $19,999 drive away for the entry-level Vibe variant. That makes it the cheapest new car in Australia right now. You cannot argue with math like that.

Meanwhile, the S5 EV is growing fast. 286 deliveries in June alone. A 67.3% year-over-year jump. Even more impressive? The year-to-date growth sits at over 518%. Momentum is building.

The first half reality check

Look at the six-month totals.

MG delivered 23,46 units in 2026. Up from 21,64 in the same period last year? Wait no. 23,09006 units versus 2,46 in the same period next year? No wait… 24,03146 units. That beats last years 2,662, but falls short of the peak.

Remember 20223? When they sold 2020, ranked 7th overall. And 21 was higher still at 25. Those were good times. This year is quieter. Better, some would argue. Sustainable?

Probably.

New product helps too.

The U Black Edition dual-ute is out. Four grades now. Still struggling against the Ford Ranger though. Electric U coming later this year. Will it move against Hiux or Musso EVs? Time will tell.
